MEDIA AND PUBLIC RELATIONS DIVISION
Media has played a significant role in making the world a
global village and reducing the communication gaps amongst the people living in
the far areas and media these days has become a competitive sector, eying the
news which is hot and good at selling. As there was no control over officers to
make statement before media, they made exaggerated statement. Variety in
statement created apparent contradiction. On the other hand, apathy to make
statement/to provide information was a bar to easy access to information which
made media hostile. Developing effective relation with media intends to improve
the skill and capacity of the Police officers. Media relation is in no way
neglected to influence public perception. Selecting the appropriate media
relations activity and knowing how to implement it effectively can make all the
difference in the level of success.
Dealing with media is not an easy task. A good way to
develop consensus within the organization is to develop a communication strategy
and to build up effective media contacts. Realizing this factuality, CMP has
initiated Media and Public Relations Division as a distinct division under the
direct command of the Police Commissioner. A Deputy Police Commissioner works as
prolocutor of the Commissioner. He is assisted by an Additional Deputy Police
Commissioner, an Assistant Police Commissioner and some officers, forces and
civil staff. This division predominantly deals with journalists. Record-keeping
of electronic and print media, deployment of camera personnel are two other
visible sections of this division.
To inform journalists Additional Deputy Police
Commissioner, Assistant Police Commissioner have to keep updated with current
events, programmes and case progress etc. Journalists are informed with various
ways. These include- SMS over mobile phone or internet, press release, contact
number and in some cases through fax. Arrangement of Press Briefing is another
important task of this division. Journalists get information of Press Briefing
via SMS. CMP News is an online web portal of CMP which is run by this division.
It is based on crime report, important events, lost & found news of the CMP
area. CMP website is updated from this division.
Record of national and international TV channels is kept on
the basis of 24/7. Important portion is edited and preserved for internal use
and future references. Video and still camera personnel are deployed to collect
still and video pictures from different programmes. They are deployed spots of
CMP area to collect still and video pictures of criminal activities. They are
edited here and preserved for a long time.
Newspaper-cutting is maintained regularly as a part of
Record keeping.
